Task 5: Reflection

Hi everyone! My name is Bea and I am this week’s analyst. So, on behalf of my teammates and me, I will reflect on task 5: the dark side of textbooks.

First and foremost, we want to outstand that one of the best parts of carrying this activity out has been exploring the world of textbooks, especially their drawbacks. Moreover, some members consider artistic works appealing and have an entertaining time while creating them! Something that could sound obvious, but most of us think, is that we enjoy doing these activities in English. They allow us to have a wider vocabulary in our second language, increasing the variety of concepts we are familiar with, so as to be more fluent in our speaking and writing.

Regarding the least interesting parts of doing activities like this one is the fact of having to stay at the university on Mondays in order to work. They require a lot of time and we end up actually tired in the end of the day. However, we ought to look on the bright side and think that our hard work will be rewarded on the future when we achieve our professional aims and become teachers!

This task has allowed us to learn that textbooks have more disadvantages than we believed. The most important aspects to highlight are their influence from the economic, political and social context, as well as their crucial role in the educational system for years, although they should have been used only as a guiding tool by teachers… Furthermore, it is important to remember that the methodology used on Wednesday’s class for presentations was quite effective: we imagined we were in an art gallery and stars had to explain their groups’ creations to the audience. It allowed everyone to be aware of other groups’ points of view and go deeper in their knowledge related to this issue.

We consider that we have done a good job this week. Our collage reflected originality, teachers’ crucial skill, and our star’s speech was actually fruitful in order to transmit our classmates the worst aspects of using textbooks at school. However, what we want to improve is our effectiveness, as we consider we could focus our attention on the task even more in order to finish earlier, providing that our work is equally good enough.

Finally, this is a paramount topic for both current and future teachers to deal with. This is mainly because most of them claim that their duty is teaching the curriculum textbooks include, when it is actually not. What about values? What about other different opinions? While it is true that textbooks are a great source of information, they lack a great deal of important aspects children ought to learn as well. So, please, let's not be like the rest of teachers and start acting on new knowledge. We are the ones who can change the dark reality of the current educational system! Find out different opinions! Use new appealing tools! Arouse your students’ interest in learning!

Thanks for reading our posts one week more,

Lovely teachers.
